What would the Founding Fathers Want?

When the founding fathers were forming the American government, they had specific ideals and wants for the way it should run.  These requirements closely embodied the pluralist model of democracy.  America as a whole is composed of many different people.  These people all have differences in opinion which is the basis of a pluralist democracy.  The founding fathers wanted a government with several different parties, otherwise known as factions, all having different opinions but still having a say.

A pluralist democracy has many groups who are all competing and compromising to get what their group or faction wants.  In Federalist #10, written by James Madison, states that "By a faction, I understand a number of citizens, whether amounting to a majority or a minority of the whole, who are united and actuated by some common impulse of passion, or of interest, adverse to the rights of other citizens, or to the permanent and aggregate interests of the community."  All factions are there to advocate for the people in their group.  Factions represent ideas that groups of people feel are important.  The founding fathers recognize that this is very important and evolved the government to be able to be influenced by factions but a faction cannot dominate the government.
The founding fathers also recognized how important different opinions are.  In Federalist #10, the point is made that the government needs to "Extend the sphere, and you take in a greater variety of parties and interests; you make it less probable that a majority of the whole will have a common motive to invade the rights of other citizens."  The more factions that are present cause more compromise.  If there is a greater amount of groups then there are more opinions to fight for.  Factions are what show peoples opinions and stance on topics and are unavoidable in a democracy.  They are also responsible for good ideas and do not allow a certain group or class to dominate.

There is a multitude of factions residing in America and that is why the founding fathers' vision for the American government is a pluralist democracy.  They wanted to create a democracy that enables people the right to an opinion while still making sure that the people and their factions do not have too much power.  The American government enables different groups to present different ideas to them which is exactly what the founding fathers wanted for this country's government.
