Trump's Relations With Iran

Left- U.S President Donald Trump
Right- Iranian President Hassan Rouhani
On May 8th, 2018, President Donald Trump chose to exit the United States from the Iran Nuclear Deal. Trump's thought process on this decision is that the JCPOA (Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action), commonly know as the Iran Nuclear Deal, was a one-sided deal that only encompasses Iran's nuclear arsenal, but not their ballistic missile programs. This historic decision was not supported by most countries, such as France. The French President Emmanuel Macron can be quoted saying on twitter,"France, Germany, and the U.K. regret the U.S. decision to leave the JCPOA." So, even without support from other world leaders, Trump continued to exit the Iran Deal and create even more tension in the Middle East. The backlash of Trump's rash decision here is that he has tainted America's trust with other countries. This ruin in trust stems from the Obama making a deal with Iran that was supposed at least 10 years, but in actuality lasted 3 years.

Within the month of July things escalated in the U.S. Iran relationship. Trump tweeted Iranian President Hassan Rouhani that if Iran threatened the U.S then the country would suffer greatly. Despite this Rouhani responded that a war with Iran would be the mother of all wars. Trump, infuriated replied with this tweet.

This left the Iran relationship in heavy tension, yet 7 days later on July 30 Trump said in a press conference that he would meet with Rouhani anytime without preconditions. Here, Trump's unpredictable nature can be seen as he leaves the relationship on neither good or bad terms. These events lead America's future in the Middle East in a haze where almost anything could happen.

Sources:
I chose to write about this topic because it demonstrates Trump's unpredictability and how it leaves relations with countries uncertain. This uncertainty ruins the trust between world leaders. I believe that if Trump would like to run a better campaign he will need to have a better method of diplomacy. As tensions rise with claims of Trump colluding with Putin he will need to use better relations methods instead of his volatile outbursts.

Discussion Questions:
  1. What do you think will come of the relationship between Trump and Rouhani?
  2. Do you think Trump's unpredictability will become the new form of diplomacy in the U.S?
  3. Is there a disregard of trust between the U.S and other countries?

  1. Trump and Rouhanis relation will get worse before it gets better because Rouhani threatened the United States and Trump came back with an attack of his own and they can’t instantly resolve their disagreements. Trump will also continue to be unpredictable in the things he does because it will cause the person or group to make a decision rather than stall. There will be a smaller amount of trust between the U.S. and other countries because they see what trump has done here and will not want to make deals with them because of the chance of this happening to them.
