Cody Wilson, creator of the 3-D printed gun, holding "the Liberator"
Ever since 2013, the 3-D printed gun has been around, yet only now is something being done about it. But wait, let's go back a little bit... who started this idea of a 3-D printed gun? Back in 2012, Cody Wilson, a sophomore in college at the time, told the media about an idea to create a 3-d printed gun. Yet it wasn't until May 2013 until the "Liberator" was created. As many Americans fear the idea of the 3-D printed gun, Cody has a different outlook. As said in an interview with the New York Times, Cody thinks, "the state should be as weak as possible relative to the individual". In other words, he believes normal people should be equal to people working for the government. Wilson was also asked by the publication if he worries about people with bad intentions handling these guns, and he only replied with "no concerns regarding public access". Critics call this force open source terrorism, but that does not change Wilson's beliefs.
The gun is made of plastic and many may wonder, does it shoot real bullets. The answer is yes. This plastic gun has the ability to fire like a regular gun, and can do damage. Due to this gun being plastic, in airports it will not be detected by metal detectors, which will bring danger to flights. It was not very hard to obtain the blueprints to print these guns. In fact, before July 31st everybody had access to them since Cody posted them online. Now the guns are temporarily banned from being created, yet that does not stop people from trying to get them.
Donald Trump had responded to this on twitter and this is his opinion.
However, Trump said the guns were being sold to public, yet they were online for free and anybody could print them. But not everybody has access to 3-D printers, and it will cost money to actually use the files to print the guns.
Questions For Discussion
Do you believe people will find a way to still print 3-D guns?
Is Trumps response accurate?
Should these guns be permanently banned? Or do you agree with Cody Wilson? Why?
Will the Liberator go viral? Or will the files stay in America?
I chose to write about this topic because it has been blowing up on the media lately and is something that everyone should be aware of. It interests me on the new technology created and how others look at the situation. I like hearing about responses from the government and how everyone is reacting to the plastic guns, so I chose to write about it.
I believe this worlds technology is just going to keep growing so i think the world wiil find a way to make guns. Ibeilieve trump will access the situation soon and will be brought up in the future. They should be permanetley banned because they are easily accesiable to many.
I believe that yes, people will find ways to print or obtain the guns themselves. Technology has continued to skyrocket in the past few years, making many many things possible for any normal human living in their home. An estimated 3.2 billion people have access to technology and the internet daily, and today, many people are close to experts when it comes to the internet. Even if it does cost a bit of money to make, people are going to be willing to spend that money to make these products, and sell them to the public. I do think these guns should be permanent banned. The past few years the U.S. have been terrifying with all of the known terrorist attacks, mass shootings, and school shootings. Security measures have increased greatly since the 9/11 terrorist attacks, and now with these guns being plastic, security will not be able to detect these threats in airports, which can lead to even more problems with terrorism. I think Cody Wilson needs to rethink all of the problems that can be caused by these 3-D printed guns before he starts to sell them.
