A Slaughter in Silence "Trumps America first policy enabled ethnic cleansing in the DRC"

I chose "how trumps america first policy enabled ethnic cleansing in the DRC", because i found much interest in the topic. This article included many interviews with people of the Congo describing shocking recent events and how brutal things are still going. One man even shared the terrifying story of his family being brutally murdered and his house being set on fire. I  found it interesting that trumps first policy of "america first" had to do with some of these repetitive recent events. I say repetitive because as we all know events like these have taken place in the Congo many times before, taking place all the way from king Leopold in 1908.  Trumps policy "america first" caused military troops to not interfere the fighting in the Congo but was just ordered to oversee the fighting and murders of the Congo. Many think trump is to blame fro the ethnic cleansing of the DRC, because many innocent lives could have been saved, at the price of this new "policy".

discussion questions

1) do you support trumps "america first" policy?

 2) what do you think about this policy? should trump have troops focus only on america for a while? and not help countries in serious need of our help like the DRC?

3) if you agree and support tumps policy, what should the people of the Congo do? should another country step in and help or should they work it out themselves?

  1. It is horrible how much violence takes place there and how corrupt governments can be. Also it’s extremely hard to see such innocent lives being taken. However I don’t see it being a responsibility of the United States to risk our own people to fight a war that is not ours. In my opinion the United Nations needs to step in and do something especially because of the strong belief of a political power behind the attacks. I do support the America First policy because we shouldn’t fight in places that we don’t belong in. It saves lives, resources and money which are all obviously crucial to have. So instead of having the United States intervene, neighboring countries, allies of the country in need, and the UN should all step in and do something.

  2. London,
This is a really unique and interesting topic you've chosen to write about, and one that I'm sure most of us don't know that much about. As a result, it would be really helpful for your classmates if you provided some summary of what exactly is happening in the DRC and how the "American First" policy is impacting it.
